I remember coming home and watching this on Letterman and buying the album the next day.

I remember alot of my friends (punk and metal) calling REM a "fag band", and of course I was mercilessly crucified when I proclaimed them my favorite band, and that 25 years later they would be legendary and I'd be vindicated.

And even though REM suffered the loss of Bill Berry more than anyone cares to admit, damn it if I wasn't right - REM got huge, are heading to the RnR Hall of Fame in a couple of years, and I get to stick it in the faces of the two friends I still see from high school.

I remember this appearance well, and a couple things strike me immediately - Michael Stipe still hadn't conquered his neuroses to become a compelling singer and frontman, and Mike Mills always was and always will be the best and most important part of REM...

In the second clip Buck talks about some of the bands coming out of Athens. In college I started making a habit of going into record stores and picking a random album out of the cut out bin. One of my finds was The Method Actors. They're actually pretty decent. This weekend I'll see if I can dig out that vinyl and transfer it to mp3 and send you two copies. They're sound is kinda like a punk version of morphine.
